What you will experience
Lübeck is called the city of seven towers. Those towers belong to 5 large churches, which we will visit during this tour together with some of the most famous historical landmarks of the city.
We will meet at the green in front of the famous Holstentor, which no visit to Lübeck can go without. Around the corner is the Salzspeicher, a 6 years old salt storage buildings and a bit further we will arrive at the first church of the tour: St. Petri. For a small fee, it's possible to go up and have a bird's eye view of the city.
Having admired the iconic Town Hall, we'll visit the St. Marien church with the devil sitting in front of it. I'll also show you a family run bakery where you can not only buy the world famous marzipan, but also have an amazing coffee with cake.
After a stroll down the river, I'll show you some tiny alleys and well hidden yards that Lübeck is famous for. There's a lot of them all over the old parts of the city, so those will be a reoccurring feature.
From St. Jakobi church it's only a short walk to the Hansemuseum, from where you get nice views of the old industrial harbour and where old and new architecture clash. We'll continue to the Heilig-Geist-Hospital, the Löwen-Apotheke and wander down the Fleischhauerstraße and up again on the Hüxstraße which are both fabulous streets for shopping in small stores, getting a coffee or a snack.
Towards the end of the tour, we'll venture into the Aegiendienviertel with the fourth church of the tour, the beautiful St. Aegienden. Then, there's only one church that's missing: Lübeck's cathedral. Sitting right next to a hill and close to the river, this will be the spot for taking awesome pictures. By then we basically will have walked all around old town Lübeck and are nearly back to our starting spot.
Who is your local guide?
Hi,hi. I am Philip, a technical writer who lived in Lübeck for almost 3 years now. Since I didn't grow up here, I had to discover everything myself but over time I fell in love with this city.
I learned more and more stories and found more and more beautiful spots. I was however born in Switzerland and grew up in different parts of southern Germany and I also lived in Canada and New Zealand for some little time, so settling down here in Lübeck has something to say about the quality of life this city has to offer.
Just like you, I love travelling and I have been to some amazing places in this world and that's why I also am an active couchsurfer - to meet people from all over the world and from different backgrounds. In my free time, I love to cycle, swim, play board games and cook and I also have a little garden for growing my own vegetables and woodworking projects.
