Meet Pasquino at Piazza Pasquino

What is it?

If you walk around the Roman Museum at Piazza Navona, you will reach a small and mostly unknown square called Piazza Pasquino. At the corner, you will notice a very old statue of a sitting man.

We know today that it's a Roman marble representing a barbarian captured warrior from the 1st century AD, but during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, people called him "Pasquino". During the strong and violent repression of rebellion, people used to write their anger down and pin the message on Pasquino's marble. When the question was raised who put this message against the Pope, people used to answer "Pasquino did!"

This action is still practised today, with funny parodies of our politicians!
